I tossed around a couple of titles in my head for this post... such as.."You ARE the Father" "Baby Daddy" etc before settling on the above! I know our children will find this story hilarious one day so I wanted to share. I'll give a little back ground first. I'm not sure if I've mentioned Grande Ronde other than just briefly on my blog before. I was really trying to save it until we were able to go back to Oregon for a visit so I could post a few pictures. Grande Ronde is a very large reservation of Native American tribes in Portland. It's also a big part of my husband's and children's heritage. Chris's paternal grandmother was one of the last few hundred of the Molalla tribe. Members of Grande Ronde are really taken care of. The casinos in the area provide major revenue for them thus enabling them to provide a lifetime of benefits to their tribe members. Among those are a nice, small supplementary income, health benefits for life, a trust fund, college tuition etc. Needless to say I'm soo happy our children were eligible for all these benefits. Poor little me on the other hand, the WIFE and MOTHER to my family is not extended the same courtesy. Nope no love for paleface here...even though we have LOTS of Native American on my side as well. I guess the Alabama tribes are just poor lol! Grande Ronde won't even provide health insurance for me..until age 55..good grief. I say that jokingly because we are all on my husbands insurance from the railroad but there was a time where we weren't and the main reason I was working and not home with Super was because I needed health insurance and couldn't get it through Chris's previous employment. Kal-el and Logan are both 1/18th making them the cut off for all benefits. So our grandchildren wont have any affiliation but I feel so grateful that at least our children do. It's not just the benefits its the heritage that will hopefully mean so much to them when they are older. I wish more than anything that they would of gotten to meet Grandmother Esther. I can't wait for our next visit to Oregon.
Now on to the funny stuff! We receive lots and lots of interesting mail from the tribe. Neat, informative news letters etc. They like their paper work. It's a lot of work to get a new member registered, birth certificate, ss cards, form after form. And it doesn't end there..do you think they are just going to write checks, pass out trust funds etc with out positive verification of heritage for those married to non tribal members outside the state of Oregon. Well I agree no they shouldn't but WOW do you have any idea how freaking embarrassing it is to set up a paternity test in a hospital and try to explain to them that its for some trust funds etc while they look at you like your crazy trash. Horrific I tell you...truly hilarious but horrific. Well that's what happened 2 years ago when we took little 6 week old Kal-el for his test.
We walked in and set down in the waiting area. It never occurred to me that I would be doubted as I am just a very take me as I am honest person. I should of known better. Three nurses walk out and start going on over Kal-el but I could feel their eyes sizing us up. From me to Chris to our poor little unsuspecting son and back. I was so so uncomfortable I actually blurted out "is there anything else?" Then one said to me I'm just trying to figure out who he looks like. He's so light. I was thinking he's a quarter African American, and 1/18th Native American, and the list goes on our babies are little melting pots. Educate yourself beyond appearance moron! I shot daggers at her and very curtly informed her that he obviously looks like his father and explained in a very snobbish fashion ( out of desperation) the entire situation. This is the reply I received "Hunny don't worry we do this kind of thing everyday" For the first time in my life I wanted strangle someone. Not only does this stupid nurse assistant think I'm a hussy but a MARRIED cheating hussy. 10x worse! Poor Chris just set there calm and stoic as usual. When I finally asked him "Can you believe that?!" He laughed and said "Lauren I told you that you should of stayed at home..but Noooo you just haaad to go with us " LOL I was slightly traumatized. Then he kept making it worse by making little jokes. Thats how rumors get started. I was furious. Needless to say I almost ran out of there the minute they got done.
One week later we got a letter in the mail. It was the test results. We did a little Maury skit before we opened it. Chris kept playing and saying "anything you need to tell me first hunny?" I admitted there was a small possibility that it could be Max's love child (our dog). Ewwww, we laughed and open the letter. There was the little DNA profile. Honestly it was so neat to look at because you can see which alleals they share. I love science. We made a copy of the form and off it was sent to the tribe to start Kal-el's benefits.
Now that we have Logan can you guess where Chris got to go all by himself when he turned 6 weeks old. LOL. I asked Chris if he could please take him to have the test on a Tuesday so I could title by blog appropriately. He of course rolled his eyes and told me that was ridiculous! I was just happy not to be going this time. As I watched Chris and Logan head out the door I had to hold in inappropriate laughter. It's true when they say you'll laugh about this one day. It's one of my favorite funny stories to share! So without further a due ..In relation to Logan Borquez...You are the ...sorry couldn't resist!
And there you have it LOL :)
